All Seikan ferryboats were retired, when Seikan-Tunnel was opened on the 13th of March 1988.
During the last days of 1988, the surviving Seikan ferryboats numbered five. They were the Hakkoda-maru, Taisetsu-maru, Mashu-maru and Towada-maru. Of these, two, Taisetsu-maru and Towada-maru were sold outside of Japan. Of the other three, Hakkoda-maru was preserved at Aomori, Mashu-maru was at Hakodate, Yote-maru was in Tokyo .... all were preserved as a ship-museum.

During 1988
The Nitchu line ran between Kitakata and Atsushio in Fukushima prefecture, but it was closed on the 1st of April 1984. During 1987, Atsushio station was reopened as the Nitchu line memorial museum.
